Super Sunday and I’m not Sure What to Do
It’s Super Bowl Sunday and I’m not sure how to react. This is one of the few times in which I have zero care who wins the game. Normally I have some type of rooting interest due to teams I don’t like, teams I do like, or just players that I want to win/lose the game.
The first Super Bowl I remember watching was Super XXIII between San Francisco and Cincinnati. Montana hit Taylor for the game winning score late in the game. I wanted the 49ers to win. Why? Can’t tell you because I was only 11 years old.
Super Bowl XXXIV between St. Louis and Tennessee was the first game win which I didn’t really care who won. I leaned towards the Rams because I liked the story of Kurt Warner but in reality I didn’t care one way or the other.
Super Bowl XL between Pittsburg and Seattle was a game in which I didn’t really care who won either. I thought it would be cool for Seattle to win because of Mike Holmgren but it wasn’t enough for me to cheer one way or the other.
Super Bowl XLVII was the last game in which I didn’t care who won. San Francisco and Baltimore played in New Orleans. That was the game in which the lights went out in the Superdome for a while.
There have been a handful of games in which I wish both teams would lose. I know that’s physically not possible but I hoped for it. Both games featuring New England and the Giants were that way. The game between New England and Seattle was also that way.
So, if I did my math correctly, this is the fourth game in which I do not care who wins one way or the other. I have reasons why I wouldn’t mind either team winning. But at the end of the day, I don’t really care and I’m not sure how to react. I’ll watch the game and I’ll enjoy it I’m sure. But not having someone to cheer for is unchartered territory fo me. So, all you Kansas City Chief fans, I hope you’re happy at the end of the day. San Francisco fans, I also hope you are happy at the end of the day.
