I haven’t said much on the subject outside of my weekly podcast I do with Steven Johnston. I’m not sure how we’re going to have high school sports this fall. The UIL made it mandatory for schools to close down for almost two weeks for deep cleaning this past week. They’ve only been practicing and working out for a month. A lot of schools in Texas have had to do a two week quarantine due to positive cases in their athletic departments (either coaches or players).

We are less than a month away from two-a-days starting up and we really don’t have an answer on how this is going to work. Football cannot be played or practiced with social distancing. It’s impossible. It’s a contact sport and must be played that way.

What about fans? Are parents and grandparents going to be allowed to watch the game in person? What about riding on busses? How is that going to work for athletes, coaches and band members? All of these things have to be ironed out in less than a month.

Now, as someone who gets paid to cover sports and has a business dependent on sports, I hope and pray we have sports this fall. I hope parents are allowed to attend the games (without masks) and I hope we get back to a some-what normal sports existence.
