NHL says 'Watch This'

On Tuesday, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman outlined how the NHL would get back to work. Let’s just say, I’m a huge fan! First off, the regular season is over. Done. Goodbye. Wait, though. There’s a caveat. Normally 16 teams make the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Well, this year 24 teams have a shot at taking home the most coveted trophy in all of sports. That’s right. Twenty-four teams will be battling it out.

    Lou Gehrig's Farewell Speech

After posting this earlier today, I went through and read the entire speech from Lou Gehrig. I’ve always been fascinated by the story of Gehrig. When I was a kid, my dad went to the local library and checked out the movie, The Pride of the Yankees. Ever since watching Gary Cooper play the part of Gehrig, I was hooked. It’ easily one of my favorite sports movies of all time.

    The Last Dance

Full disclosure here: I am a Michael Jordan fan. I am one of those nerds that have read every book I can. I have watched all the highlight films. I know his stats. I am a Jordan fan. With that being said, it would then be understood that nobody can convince me there is another basketball player that will ever be as good as Jordan. This is something The Last Dance has shown us over the past four weeks.

    Senior Night

When UIL made the announcement they were shutting down spring sports, my mind started racing. I had been thinking about something to do for the seniors in case this happened. Well it happened and here we are. My first thought was how the seniors in the spring sports (baseball, softball, track, golf, tennis and soccer) were going to miss out on senior night. Every sport does it. Chances are you’ve either participated in senior night yourself as a parent or an athlete.

In case people are curious, during the On this day in history segment for my sports reports, I’ve been concentrating on the 1999 Stanley Cup Champion Dallas Stars and the 2011 NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks. If they played a game on this day that year, I’m going to talk about it.

Last night, the local baseball team decided to surprise their head coach with a parade up and down the street. You can read more about it here. I’m glad the parents asked me to come be a part of it to document it with pictures. Words cannot do it justice but I tried.

In this episode, Steven and myself talk about the new head football coach as well as the new Athletic Director for North Lamar ISD. Well, we dive into that as well as announcing our top five all-time DFW athletes.

The Last Dance was so good. It lived up to the hype and I cannot wait for next week’s episode.

ESPN is showing classic boxing matches. I normally don’t watch this channel at all but they are showing a Mike Tyson fight. I never got to see him box during his career since I was a little too young. Wow! I didn’t realize how dominating he was.

Essential Sports Podcast Episode 2: My New Coach

Next edition of The Essential Sports Podcast has been recorded. In this episode, we talk about new head football coaches coming to Prairiland and Detroit ISD. We also discuss ESPN’s H-O-R-S-E debacle, potential disaster for the NFL Draft and looking on the bright side for the Texas Rangers! Be sure to check it out here.

Top five list for today’s podcast: Top five current DFW athletes.

Going to be honest here. The first four were super easy. Number five gave me some fits.

When I was researching today’s sportscast, I came across this interesting piece of information:

Until 1936, basketball had a jump ball at center court after every single made basket.

    Sports Held Hostage: Day 32

I was really excited about the NBA/WNBA HORSE challenge that was going to be shown on ESPN tonight. I got ready to watch it and I was 100% disappointed. The idea was great. The pairings were great. The execution was terrible! I understand the social distancing thing and not having a lot of people together. However, you mean to tell me the best and only way to broadcast this event was over phones and WiFi?

    A New Podcast Featuring Sports

So Steven Johnston and myself decided to start a podcast. It’s a podcast in which we talk about sports. Steven needed to scratch an itch to talk about sports now that he doesn’t get to do it on a regular basis. And I, well…I just like talking about sports period. The format is quite simple. Each week, we both will bring one topic to the table for discussion and we’ll spend about 25 minutes giving our opinions on each topic.

    Sports Held Hostage: Day 15

Hard to believe it’s been over two weeks since Rudy Gobert’s positive Covid-19 test. In reality it seems like a lifetime ago. In those two weeks we watched every sporting event shut down. Although leagues are talking about a restart date and when they could possibly try and get a season up and running, we have nothing yet. The sad reality hits today when you realize this is opening day!!! Or should I say this should be opening day.

    Sports Held Hostage: Day 13

It was one week ago today they sent us home with the mandate to work from home for a while. Nobody knows how long “a while” is. We are all in a holding pattern. By “we” I mean the entire country. Shoot the entire world for that matter. It’s weird. The uncertainty of tomorrow. The unkown. Its still weird to turn on the TV at night and not have any live sports.

    Sports held hostage: Day 5

Today hasn’t been too bad. There has been lots of sports to keep my mind occupied. The NFL has lots of movement going on. Dak gets the franchise tag for the Cowboys. This could be a good thing or it could be really bad. The Bills got a number one receiver though. That’s what I’m happy about as they trade for Stefon Diggs. Many people felt like the Bills were one top receiver away last season.

Then I thought it would be fun to bring it to my blog. So here is today in Sports History:

    Sports Held Hostage: Day 4

Another day of doing absolutely nothing. Unless you call watching movies all day doing something. If you do then I did a ton today. It’s been raining off and on and it’s a bit chilly outside. Started this morning watching an episode of Witcher. Then I cooked breakfast (biscuits, gravy and chicken sausage). After that I watched the 2009 movie Watchmen. The. The 1989 version of Batman. Then it was Jumanji: The Next Level.
