Sports Held Hostage: Day 3

Today was a weird day. I didn’t do much. Laid around and watched movies. The wife and I went to the grocery store last night and the sight was crazy. There wasn’t a ton of people there but the shelves were completely empty in places. I saw one couple walking to their car with three buggies packed full of groceries. Not judging. I don’t know how much they normally consume.

    Sports Problems!

I’ve had lots of people the last couple of days joke around with me about “what am I going to do now that sports is cancelled.” Let’s be honest for a second, though. This is a way that I make money. Not a lot but it is used. But what about the other people? The people that do this for a full time job. The people that write and cover sports.

Seems like a foregone conclusion that the NHL will suspend the season going forward. I know we’ll find out more today but it just seems inevitable.

PA announcing at a high school baseball game last night. Panther with a walk off win in the 7th on senior night.

Obviously, I love the Bills Mafia, but this just takes it to a whole new level. #BillsMafia

    Sports as a Side Hustle!

This was an absolutely crazy week for me. Last Sunday, I was sitting the press box of an XFL game 120 miles away. On Monday night, I covered a local high school softball game. Tuesday found me 45 miles away doing a college basketball broadcast. Friday I was back at that same location doing a high school basketball broadcast. On Saturday, I drove 100 miles to watch a hockey game (as a fan).

As a sports fan, I will tell you that I go through extreme emotions with my team. For instance, two weeks ago the Dallas Stars were going to win the Stanley Cup. You could bank on it. No doubt. However, today, they’re not even making the playoffs.

    I need therapy.

Sitting here in the Pressbox at Globe Life Park watching an XFL game and I’m trying to figure out how I got so lucky.

    February Photoblogging challenge: Vision

I had a vision a while back to do something with sports. I had no idea it would start growing to what it is today. No idea where it will go from here either but I’m excited. All started with a vision.

More Thoughts on the Baseball Cheating Scandal

The more I think about cheating in baseball the more my head spins around. There’s so much to try and wrap your head around. The part I keep coming back to is the part where players are not going to be punished and the World Series is not going to be stripped away. Now, I should clarify and say that Houston and Boston may have won the title without cheating. Problem is, we will never know because they did cheat.

So the Chicago Black Sox were banned for cheating because they fixed the World Series in the early 1900’s. Now, we have this current cheating scandal that allowed two teams to win the World Series from cheating but those players aren’t being punished?

Is there anything more embarrassing in sports than an own goal in soccer? It seems pretty demoralizing for the team as well.

I have some thoughts on the XFL and plan on talking about them in the near future. For now, though, I would like to say that I enjoyed the first weekend and I think there’s potential for some fun. It won’t replace the NFL but it doesn’t need to!

Got an email from the XFL and my media credentials have been approved for the entire season. See you at the Ballpark!!!

Super Sunday and I’m not Sure What to Do

It’s Super Bowl Sunday and I’m not sure how to react. This is one of the few times in which I have zero care who wins the game. Normally I have some type of rooting interest due to teams I don’t like, teams I do like, or just players that I want to win/lose the game. The first Super Bowl I remember watching was Super XXIII between San Francisco and Cincinnati.

One of the best things about ESPN+? Being able to watch hockey on a night the Stars aren’t playing.

    Media Day

I always love the ability to do things like this. North Lamar had media day on Wednesday to unveil a new uniform. Players were available to be interviewed. This is a good group of kids and it will be fun to watch them play.

    Today is a Sad Day!!!

As I recorded a podcast this afternoon with Greg Morris, my phone notified me of something that had happened earlier in the day. The news was completely out of nowhere, and when I read it, I had to do a double-take. I wasn’t sure I had read it correctly. “Breaking: Kobe Bryant dies at 41: NBA legend killed in helicopter crash in Los Angeles.” Less than 24 hours earlier, Kobe was the talk of the NBA world because LeBron James was about to pass him for third on the all-time scoring list.

    Winter Classic 2020

This is by far the coolest sporting event I have ever been a part of. To be in the Cotton Bowl in downtown Dallas with 85,000 other hockey fans is something I cannot even begin to articulate. Cannot wait to do this again. Road trip to Minnesota for New Years Day 2021 anyone?
